OiER supporting the IAEA at their "Boosting Capacity for Cancer Care" Day

Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide and in 2018 alone was responsible for an estimated 9.6 million deaths. Developing countries endure the lion’s share of this burden, resulting in a further strain on scarce healthcare resources.

The IAEA supports national governments in using nuclear science and technology to better diagnose, treat and manage this disease. As the number of cancer cases grows, it is increasingly important for countries, particularly in the developing world, to have the necessary tools and expertise to meet this challenge.

Under the title Boosting Capacity for Cancer Care, this year’s IAEA event to mark World Cancer Day will highlight the IAEA’s integrated approach to providing national authorities and experts with know-how and support for a comprehensive approach to cancer management. The latest technological advances in nuclear and radiation medicine to diagnose and treat cancer will also be explored.

The event will be opened by keynote speaker Mack Roach III, Director of the Particle Therapy Research Program and Outreach of the University of California San Francisco, and will be followed by an expert panel discussion.
